ANC Cabinet shuffle, as Premier Mchunu resigns
DURBAN – As KZN Premier, Senzo Mchunu resigns, and KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu takes his place, a cabinet reshuffle is expected in the ANC.
Mchunu was reportedly prompted to resign after failing to comply with ANC leadership on governmental issues.
Reports surfacing over the weekend stated that provincial leadership ordered Mchunu to resign after an ANC provincial executive committee (PEC) meeting.
Tensions mounted when Mchunu lost his position as chairman to Sihle Zikalala during a provincial elective conference last year. Political analysts predict potential divisions within the ANC if frictions between Mchunu’s supporters and advocates of his resignation ensue.
Public discord has broken out according to reports on the Zikalala/Mchunu divide and a boycott of the ANC ward councillor selection process has resulted.
While plans to oust him incited feelings of betrayal among his supporters, Mchunu ‘resigned’ on Monday afternoon despite pressures to remain in cabinet.
Mchunu’s resignation will allegedly spur a KZN Cabinet reshuffle despite upcoming municipal elections to be held in August.
