Cops arrested for stealing diesel
Brighton Beach police arrested three of their own police officers for truck hijacking and theft of diesel. The arrest follows an intensive investigation by police after a truck driver was allegedly hijacked in Rossburgh earlier this month.
The truck driver was accosted by six unknown armed men who stuffed him into a vehicle boot and dumped him at Umbumbulu. A case was opened and the following day, the Durban Flying Squad recovered the truck in Jacobs Road. A security guard who was guarding the place during the recovery, drew a firearm and tried to shoot at police. He was arrested and his unlicensed firearm was seized. He had appeared in court as the investigation was continuing. The arrested police officers have been linked to the hijacking, theft of diesel and also other truck hijacking incidents that occurred in February 2016. The suspects are facing several charges and will appear in court soon.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded Brighton Beach detectives for the arrests. “The investigation will continue until all those that are involved are put behind bars and we are confident that more arrests are imminent. We will not tolerate corrupt police officers in the SAPS. Let this be a warning to others in the service that collude with criminals that your days are numbered,” she said.
