‘Drunken’ Phoenix man, fourth drown victim at Virginia Pier
DURBAN – At approximately 2pm today, the fourth body, that of a Phoenix man, was recovered from the Virgina Beach pier.
It has been reported that the 40-year-old man was allegedly drunk when he fell off the unbarricaded pier which held only a red tape until the new steel railings were ready to be installed to protect beach patrons.
Neville Dolandes of Phoenix was found about 500 metres off the shoreline and had allegedly fallen off from the pier which is missing part of its railing.
Police divers from Durban Search and Rescue along with lifeguards recovered the body of the victim and family members have positively identified him.
Capt Raymond Deokaran of the Durban North SAPS confirmed the drowning incident: “There was no indication that the man was a fisherman like the previous victims, however he was under the influence of alcohol at the time which he fell off the pier,” he said.
