Insurance fraudsters claim up to R1.3 million after killing victims
PIETERMARITZBURG- Two suspects who were accused for being the masterminds of a syndicate defrauding insurance companies have pleaded guilty to charges of murder, attempted murder and fraud.
It is reported that the suspects took life insurance covers for their victims after which they would kill them by running them over with stolen vehicles and then claiming the insurance payment.
The accused had managed to claim an amount of up to R1.3 million from different insurance companies from the death of the victims.
On Monday, Hlengiwe Zuma (41) and Fisani Khoza (40) pleaded guilty in the Pietermaritzburg High Court and were sentenced to fifteen years for murder, eight years for attempted murder and eight years for fraud.
Both suspects were arrested in October last year following a thorough investigation by Organised Crime Hawks members. It has been reported that Zuma and Khoza had attained life cover insurance policies for their victims before they conspired to murder them.
In August, the accused took the one victim to the Greytown area where they ran him over with a stolen vehicle and killed him instantly.
An inquest docket was opened at Greytown police station and Hlengiwe Zuma immediately claimed the insurance policy and shared the money with her accomplices.
In November, Hlengiwe Zuma identified another victim who was working for her as a domestic worker. She was taken a local tavern by her accomplices and drugged before she was taken to Copesville area where she too was placed on the road and one of the accused drove a stolen motor vehicle at a high speed and ran her over.However the accused fled the scene without ensuring if the victim was dead and she fortunately was taken to hospital for medical attention.
In another incident another victim was found lying on the road after an intensive investigation by Hawks members, it was revealed that this victim was also insured by Khoza and the deceased was intentionally run over with a stolen vehicle and he too was declared dead at the scene.
According to SAPS and Hawks, Further investigation revealed that the same accused were responsible for the death of Bongani Gcabashe who was shot and killed in August. Gcabashe was killed after the accused failed to get him drunk and ran him over with a vehicle. Suspects also involved in the insurance fraud syndicate,Zamokwakhe Khanyile (37), Doda Khumalo (37) and Jabulile Zaca (54) will appear again in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Thursday, 30 November.
