Mariannhill massacre- second suspect arrested
PINETOWN- Following an update from the SAPS, a second suspect has been arrested for the Mariannhill massacre.
This morning police arrested a second suspect a, 27-year-old man who was found in possession of 303 rifle and 9mm pistol. He is set to appear tomorrow in the Pinetown Magistrates Court.
The first suspect Mbongiseni Brian Shozi (24) who is in for charges of murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunitions is expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrates Court on Wednesday,22 November.
The initial crime committed was in October where a family was ambushed in their home by unknown gunmen who fired multiple shots at the five members of the family aged between 19 and 34 in Mariannhill, Pinetown.
Four of the family members died at the scene and the other victim died in hospital on arrival.
Mariannhill police have opened a docket with five counts of murder and it has been transferred to the Provincial Organised Crime Task Team for investigation. The motive of the attack is subject to our on-going investigation.
The members of the Provincial Organised Crime Unit then assisted police in following up on information with regards to the whereabouts of outstanding suspects allegedly involved in the Marianhill massacre. Investigations led police to Umbumbulu where police spotted two of the suspects walking along a gravel road. When the police attempted to apprehend the suspects, it is alleged that they opened fire at police officers.
The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Langa welcomed the latest development in the investigation. “This gives me hope and shows that the investigation team is not resting.
