The 2016 Durban July leads a new pack
GREYVILLE – Durban was not the warmest place to be at the 2016 Durban July which played host to a new kind of Race-day fashion.
Amidst the ball gowns and men’s suits, stood jeans and sports coats, boots and fleece jackets. The fashion prestige of the July was wrapped up against an unusually icy Durban day.
Nathi Zwane was dressed in a black and whited checked suit, interpreting this year’s theme his own way. “That’s what I do every year,”he said, “I just love the fashion.” Attending his first Durban July, Kishen Jairam thought this year’s theme was “on point,” suiting up in classic July style with his friends. Nthuthu Magaqa was the picture of elegance in a royal blue dress. “I just choose something glamorous from my wardrobe,” she said.
The Grand stand picnic sites were bustling with enthusiastic race-goers braving the cold in coats and hats while the Grubba food and drink spot saw everything from party-shop- king, queen and joker costumes to satin ball gowns and elegant shweshwe dresses mingling in the chaotic mass.
While not everyone dressed up, Durbanites certainly showed up despite the cold and Mr South Africa Contestant, Ashley Eddy was impressed with the turn-out. “I was anticipating a lot of people, but there are more people here than I expected,”said Edddy who was looking dapper in his Lord Louis suit.
It was another dressed-up day at the races for some while others wore-out the cold.
