Thousands expected at Highland Gathering
AMANZIMTOTI – The Amanzimtoti Lion’s Club will host their 53rd annual Highland Gathering on April 29 at Hutchison Park.
“We are expecting between10 000 to 12 000 people,” said President of the Amanzimtoti Lions Club, Carol Botha. This year 33 pipe bands will enter the national competition. “It’s a full house, with pipe bands coming from all over South Africa,” said Botha. Hailing from Ireland will be judge, Terry Tulley to name the winners. During the event all 33 bands will gather together to perform Amazing Grace.
While the pipe bands are the main attraction, there will also be a horse show, genuine craft market, food stalls, kids play zones, car shows and a beer tent featuring live performances from 10 bands- both local and international.
The first Highland Gathering was held in June 1963, as part of a fund raising event for a public primary school and today, the spirit of community continues. All proceeds from ticket sales are “fed back” into the community. “In the past, funds have been put toward a library for a local primary school, food parcels, hearing aids and glasses for the community,” said Botha.
